BU Medical Equipment > Product Innovation

Interview with Gaetano Scaramozzino

Technical Director Exalens

Innovation for Cefla > BU Medical Equipment > Product innovation Exalens

What does it mean to Exalens to join a large group like Cefla, which has a 90-year history and operates on different markets?

“Exalens was born as the Artificial Intelligence arm of Exabyte, an IT consultancy firm specializing in digital healthcare software products that use systems which optimise relations between patients, doctors and healthcare facilities.

More specifically, Exalens was founded to bring AI and machine learning into the medical sphere. Although still young, Exalens has already filed two patent applications aimed at improving support for dentistry professionals in the pathological recognition and pre-diagnostic phase.

The development areas concern Computer Vision and Imaging Segmentation. These are useful not for making an initial diagnoses but for providing a second opinion. Being part of a more international organisation like Cefla broadens our horizons, allowing us to extend and develop our vision and ideas.

We entered the Medical Equipment BU and joined the Research & Development department: we clicked’ with them immediately, as the skills we bring are complementary and, indeed, essential, to those that already exist.

We work mainly with AI, the cloud, user interfaces and streaming services: skills in high demand at Cefla, which has a long history of developing cutting-edge machine interfaces.

In merging these worlds, we can state that Cefla Medical Equipment is now one of the few companies on the market to have attained such a high level of development, providing everything needed by a dental practice. This is already an innovation in itself, true process innovation that complements product innovation.

Since all equipment contains automatic and semi-automatic information that can be entered and, therefore, analysed and improved, our skills bring improved usability to the interface.

Hence the development of Neowise, a software that will start with integration of the Imaging area and then be extended to other products in other Medical Equipment Business Lines.

This will lead to a considerable strengthening of the quality of the Cefla brand, especially in the healthcare and dental sectors. Thanks to an in-depth study of final customers, our products take into account how the dental profession is evolving and how end consumers’ health choices are changing.

This means we’re able to design and build products that illustrate what the dental practice of tomorrow will look like: a facility increasingly made up of specialists who are highly attentive not just to end customers’ dental health but also their aesthetic needs.

The great strength of these Cefla-developed integrations lies in the creation of a ‘closed system’, along the lines of the Apple model, in which integration between different products is ensured by fast, user-friendly digitized cloud services.”
